About McAllister Audio McAllister Audio was born from equal parts frustration and fascination. For more than three decades, I have worked at the repair bench, servicing professional audio equipment from every corner of the industry. Over those years I saw the same patterns repeated time and time again—corners cut to meet a price point, components selected for cost instead of longevity, and products whose marketing promised far more than their construction delivered. Every repair became another lesson in how not to build professional audio equipment. At the same time, I could never forget a sound. Years earlier, while playing through a vintage Japanese recording console from the 1970s, I experienced something that stayed with me. It wasn't simply accurate. It wasn't simply clean. It had life. It had depth. It invited music rather than merely reproducing it. When I finally decided to build my own microphone preamplifier in 2007, I pulled that old console out of storage, disassembled it, and began studying every stage that contributed to the sound I remembered. That project became the beginning of a journey that continues today. The McAllister microphone preamplifier is not the result of a single design effort. It is the culmination of nearly two decades of refinement. Every major element has been reimagined, redesigned, and ultimately brought in-house—from our custom mu-metal input transformer and Jensen-inspired 990 discrete operational amplifier to our output transformer, stepped gain control, circuit layout, grounding strategy, and mechanical construction. Every revision has been guided by one question: Does this serve the music? Technical performance matters. Low noise, wide bandwidth, excellent linearity, and reliable construction are not optional—they are the foundation of good engineering. But engineering is not the destination. Music is. Every design decision reflects that philosophy. We choose components because they are the right engineering solution, not because they are fashionable or inexpensive. We use a precision 47-position stepped gain switch instead of noise-prone potentiometers. Audio relays replace mechanical signal switches where performance demands it. Faceplate markings are chemically etched rather than silk-screened because permanence matters. Internal layout, grounding, mechanical construction, and serviceability receive the same level of attention as the audio path itself. Nothing exists merely for appearance. Everything has a purpose. This is not an exercise in nostalgia, nor is it a pursuit of laboratory perfection for its own sake. It is the belief that exceptional engineering should disappear into the background, allowing the performance to take center stage. Our philosophy can be summarized in four words: Industrial Synesthesia and Groove. To us, those words describe the point where engineering and artistry become inseparable. Steel, copper, magnetics, mathematics, and craftsmanship are not ends in themselves—they are the means by which music is allowed to breathe. Our hope is that our equipment is used to feel the performance... to hear the moment, and to live the music.
